Death is a big deal to most people even though it is obviously the only way most of us (if not all of us) are going to exit this phase of our lives on this side of eternity. Strong men, tyrants, and despots become cowards and weaklings when they come face to face with death.
I have seen a Libyan Strong man; a Liberian Dictator and a Nigerian General all beg for their lives with fear in their eyes when they felt like their lives were about to come to a brutal end. The Nigerian general lived to tell the story and was roundly mocked but for the strongman and the dictator their day of reckoning had truly come, and all their appeals were ignored; they were not so lucky.
Men will liquidate any assets, call in any favors, and endure all kinds of torture and humiliation in the name of treatment, medical intervention, and therapy just to hold death back for a few more days, months or years. The truth remains that most humans live in the constant shadow of death.
The fear of death has become the major instrument of domination and control in the hands of the devil. The enemy can literally get most people on the earth to do anything to avoid the risk of having their lives taken from them.
It is true that certain choices can affect how long and how well we live, but the truth is the healthiest person on earth who happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people doing the wrong thing can easily have their lives snuffed out or cut short by a stray bullet, a drunk driver, mechanical, hydraulic or electrical failure in an aircraft for example.
“Since the children are made of flesh and blood, it’s logical that the Savior took on flesh and blood to rescue them by his death. By embracing death, taking it into himself, he destroyed the Devil’s hold on death and freed all who cower through life, scared to death of death’’ – Hebrews 2:14-15 MSG.
No genuine child of God needs to fear death anymore. The Savior took on flesh and blood so that HE could submit to death, even the death of the cross. When He died for us, He took the sting out of death and the victory out of the grave. He took the keys of death, hell, and the grave away from the enemy and gave those keys to His Church for us to rule and reign over the forces of life and death, light and darkness. He died so that we can deploy the forces of the Kingdom of Light as we destroy the powers of the forces of darkness.
The Messiah tasted death for all men; death does not have to sting anymore; death can and has become the easiest thing that the redeemed have to endure.
We cannot say the same for the unredeemed. Those who have not taken refuge in the blood of the lamb and the power of his cross, his death, burial, and resurrection will die at least twice. The first death (natural) will happen at the end of their time on this earth. The second death (spiritual and eternal separation from God for all of eternity) will happen when they leave the earth.
Those who love and have yielded the totality of their lives are going to die only once whilst the unbeliever will die many times due to the fear of death.
This resurrection season, ask the Holy Spirit to activate the death, burial, resurrection, and ascension into heaven as experiential realities in your life.
